(*)…And Other Desperate Tunes/A Requiem For A Final Beer Of A 12 Pack On The 4th Of July.

When Bobtje sends us a CD for reviewing, most of the time it’s one by some musical loner, loser or weirdo, the kind most other people wouldn’t want to review anyway. We can’t be denied a certain soul connection with the musical tramps and drifters: we’re of the same type, probably… But like John Whipple, let’s face it, there aren’t many around. A Dan Smolla might come close, but there are more differences than similarities. We don’t try our a hand at description of the man, but we explicitly refer to his site with many columns, and with the also hilarious ,,biographies’’ (we especially like the Alien Abduction Bio!) ,,We’’ weren’t forgotten: ,, So some Belgians are helping to promote my music. There's a podcast and a blog or two. I guess someone's got to do it. It might as well be them. Besides, they are so damn evil!’’ En ,, According to them, I still live in Salt Lake City. That's Salt Lake for ya, even when you leave, you're still stuck there…’’ So naughty Whipple is in accordance with famous Belgium haters like Victor Hugo and Lord Byron, indeed! But at the same time we read fine words of appreciation for the support by BBP in his parcel. So his attitude is at least partly inspired by artistic ponderings. With lots a humour, that is, and in almost total absence of commercial intentions. We learn that this bluesy stray cat ,,lost’’ his last pair of shoes, craves the cafes towards closing time and the loads of beer that go with it (the title of The Last Cold One says enough, but one should also consider the two subtitles…) and, as one can deduct from local reviews, that he has a past record, as a musician, we mean. But for him it all seems to ,,begin’’ in 2005 with the forerunner of this one,  Songs For No One, possibly as he can only provide these full CD’s. The Last Cold One shows a Whipple who sings quite well, and plays acoustic guitars a lot better than you might expect: just enjoy his playing on Low! But you also hear a string of guests who fill in adequately without detracting attention. The songs deal with…beer, night life, the misery of love (what did you expect?!) and express his extreme dislike of the music industry and the American way of being lived in general. If you like your music to be austere and unadorned, but at the same time sound, varied, credible and with a heart, then John Whipple (now residing in Portland, Oregon, or is Belgium behind again?) is as good a solution as (Europeans as) Erik Vandenberge or Philippe Ménard. Get also his downloads at MySpace, with the jolly Tom Waits pastiche The Assholes Got All The Money !
